The Facts about Supplemental Health Insurance Products

Posted on: Thursday, November 14, 2013

How many people do you know who have been affected by cancer? Of course, if the answer is even one, that’s one person too many. Sadly, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer (www.cancer.org) Facts and Figures for 2013, half of all men and one third of all women in this country will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetimes. Scary stuff.

The same source also notes that as much as 62% of all costs associated with cancer are non-medical. These include loss of income, alternative treatments, child care, and home aid. These are never covered by traditional insurance policies. The best health insurance policy will still include deductibles that, as costs mount, may not be affordable.

What, then, do you do to avoid falling into a financial hole from which there is no exit? This is the sort of problem that people all too often seek solutions to when it is too late. The realization that an unexpected medical crisis will wipe out your savings and crush the security of your family often hits home after the fact. You need to take action on these matters before the need arises. You need supplemental insurance.

What is Supplemental Insurance?

Supplemental insurance, as the name implies, fills the gaps that your health insurance policy doesn’t cover. There is a large variety of supplemental products available for your use, most of which can be quite inexpensive and can be maintained for a long time. Make small payments each month, and keep the policy for only when you may need it. You could receive a lump sum payment which may be used any way you see fit.

There are even excellent supplemental policies for seniors. They often use supplemental insurance to pay for rehab services following surgery, or hospitalization. If you should need to secure a room in a facility that you won’t even need for a few days, these products will make it possible. They make it possible for you to make payments that Medicare won’t.

These policies are for the living, to help them through hard times, and get on with their lives. I often have people thank me for suggesting them, because they really make an amazing difference in relieving much of the stress and anxiety patients experience while worrying about their families and loved ones. People who are sick have enough stress without compounding it by worrying about their finances.

As deductibles rise due to changes in health care plans, the need for supplemental insurance products has never been greater. Don’t be caught without a safety net.
